The five pillars of Islam
Discover the foundational acts of worship that shape daily life and devotion in Islam.
1. The foundation of faith and prayer
Islam rests upon five foundational pillars. The first of these is testifying that there is no god but Allah and that Muhammad ﷺ is His servant and messenger.1 Faith has many branches, and this declaration that there is no god but Allah is the most excellent of them all.2 Allah Himself witnesses that there is no deity except Him.3
The second pillar is establishing regular prayer.1 Allah commands believers to worship Him alone and establish prayer for His remembrance.4 Prayer is decreed for believers at specified times.5 Standing before your Creator offers a calm refuge, helping you pause your busy routine to renew your heart.
Indeed, I am Allah. There is no deity except Me, so worship Me and establish prayer for My remembrance
The Prophet ﷺ taught the call to prayer, the adhan, which summons people to prayer and to success.6 Establishing prayer at the two ends of the day and at the approach of the night is prescribed, for good deeds do away with misdeeds.7 As you begin learning the steps, be patient with yourself. Taking things one prayer at a time makes this devotion a natural and peaceful part of your life.
2. Charity and fasting in Ramadan
In Islam, giving obligatory charity, known as Zakat, and fasting during the month of Ramadan are essential pillars of faith.8 These acts help you grow spiritually and build devotion. They gently turn your attention away from material distractions and direct it toward what matters most.
Giving from your wealth serves as a purification for your soul.9 Allah instructed the Prophet ﷺ to take charity to purify the believers and cause them to grow.10 Furthermore, Allah multiplies the reward for men and women who give charity and promises them a noble return.11
Take, [O, Muhammad], from their wealth a charity by which you purify them and cause them increase, and invoke [Allah 's blessings] upon them. Indeed, your invocations are reassurance for them. And Allah is Hearing and Knowing
Fasting was commanded for believers so that they may become righteous.12 This fast lasts for a limited number of days. If you are ill or traveling, you can make up an equal number of days at another time.13 Experiencing hunger helps purify the heart from pride and nurtures deep empathy for others.
The spiritual reward for this devotion is immense. The Prophet ﷺ taught that whoever fasts during Ramadan with sincere faith and the hope of attaining reward will have all past sins forgiven.14 Through both charity and fasting, your wealth and your heart find true renewal.
Narrated Abu Huraira: Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said, "Whoever observes fasts during the month of Ramadan out of sincere faith, and hoping to attain Allah's rewards, then all his past sins will be forgiven
3. The sacred pilgrimage of Hajj
One of the five basic principles of Islam is performing Hajj, which is the pilgrimage to Mecca.8 The first house of worship established for all mankind was set in Makkah as a blessed place of guidance.15 Allah called for this pilgrimage to be announced so that believers would arrive on foot and from every distant pathway.16
And proclaim to the people the Hajj [pilgrimage]; they will come to you on foot and on every lean camel; they will come from every distant pass
This sacred journey to the House is an obligation for anyone who is able to find a way there.17 It provides a chance for profound spiritual renewal. The Prophet ﷺ shared that a person who performs Hajj to the House without committing sins or indecent behavior returns as pure as a newborn child.18
Together, these acts support a life of purposeful devotion. The Prophet ﷺ taught that Islam is built on five pillars: testifying to faith, establishing prayer, giving charity, fasting in Ramadan, and performing Hajj.8
Take your time as you grow into these practices. Each act of worship trains your heart and connects your daily life with your Creator. With patience and small, steady steps, you can build a meaningful life of devotion.
