Quran & Recitation
Reciting the Quran when it feels hard
Find encouragement, patience, and reward when reading the Quran feels difficult.
1. The reward for struggling
Learning to read the Quran in Arabic can feel overwhelming at first. The script is unfamiliar, and sounding out each letter takes real effort. You might stumble over words, hesitate, or feel that your progress is slow. Please know that this is a completely normal part of the journey.
When reading feels clumsy, it is easy to imagine that your recitation is lacking. Yet your sincere effort holds high value. The Prophet ﷺ taught that a person who is proficient with the Quran is associated with the noble recording angels. He also shared that someone who falters while reading the Quran and finds it difficult will receive two rewards.1
A'isha reported Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) (as saying): One who is proficient in the Qur'an is associated with the noble, upright, recording angels; and he who falters in it, and finds it difficult for him, will have two rewards
Every pause and every hesitation counts in your favor. Allah does not charge any soul except with that within its capacity.2 He also promises that He will surely guide those who strive for Him.3 If you work hard to learn the Quran by heart and recite it with great difficulty, you will receive a double reward.4
2. Allah makes it easy
When you open the Quran, the letters and sounds might feel unfamiliar. You may wonder if you can ever read it smoothly. Yet Allah tells us that He has made the Quran easy for remembrance.5 The Quran has been made easy to remember, asking if there is anyone who will take it to heart.6
وَلَقَدۡ يَسَّرۡنَا ٱلۡقُرۡءَانَ لِلذِّكۡرِ فَهَلۡ مِن مُّدَّكِرٖ
And We have certainly made the Qur'an easy for remembrance, so is there any who will remember
He has set out every kind of example within the Quran so people can remember.7 Indeed, with hardship comes ease.8 Truly, ease comes with hardship.9
Our faith is built on patience and care. The Prophet ﷺ taught that Allah loves gentleness in all matters.10 He also directed believers to make things easy for people and not to make things difficult.11
… Make things easy for the people, and do not make it difficult for them, and make them calm (with glad tidings) and do not repulse (them) …
Take a slow breath before you begin reading today. Allow yourself to pause and stumble without feeling discouraged. Gentleness toward yourself honors the spirit of this journey, and every quiet effort brings you closer to the words.
3. Taking small and steady steps
When you open the Quran as a new Muslim, the Arabic text can seem intimidating. You do not have to finish long passages or complete entire chapters right away. Allah tells the believers to recite whatever is easy for them from the Quran.12 Even practicing a single short verse is a meaningful step forward.
Indeed, your Lord knows, [O Muhammad], that you stand [in prayer] almost two thirds of the night or half of it or a third of it, and [so do] a group of those with you. And Allah determines [the extent of] the night and the day. He has known that you [Muslims] will not be able to do it and has turned to you in forgiveness, so recite what is easy [for you] of the Qur'an. He has known that there will be among you those who are ill and others traveling throughout the land seeking [something] of the bounty of Allah and others fighting for the cause of Allah. So recite what is easy from it and establish prayer and give zakah and loan Allah a goodly loan. And whatever good you put forward for yourselves - you will find it with Allah. It is better and greater in reward. And seek forgiveness of Allah. Indeed, Allah is Forgiving and Merciful
Every individual letter you pronounce carries immense value. The Prophet ﷺ shared that whoever recites a letter from the Book of Allah receives a reward, and that reward is multiplied tenfold. He explained that Arabic letters like Alif, Lam, and Mim are counted separately so each letter brings its own tenfold reward.13
… [Whoever recites a letter] from Allah's Book, then he receives the reward from it, and the reward of ten the like of it. …
This means that even sounding out a few letters each day brings real blessings. Allah sent down the Quran gradually in parts so that it could be recited to people over a long period.14 He instructed the Prophet ﷺ not to move his tongue in haste to rush the recitation.15 Instead, the Quran is to be recited in a calm and measured manner.16
Do not worry if your daily practice feels small. A steady routine of reading just one or two lines with care will build your comfort over time. Pick a quiet moment each day, sound out the letters at your own pace, and let that steady effort become your daily habit.
4. Finding peace in the words
When reciting feels slow or halting, it is easy to focus only on the mechanics of the letters. Yet the purpose of Allah's book goes far beyond speed or flawless pronunciation. Allah sent down the Quran as a healing and a mercy for believers.17 It serves as an instruction and a cure for what troubles the human chest.18
And We send down of the Qur'an that which is healing and mercy for the believers, but it does not increase the wrongdoers except in loss
Whenever you sit with the Quran, you engage in dhikr, which means the remembrance of Allah. Believing hearts find true rest and assurance through this remembrance.19 Even if you stumble over a single verse for minutes, your heart can still drink from that quiet comfort.
This peace is very real. The Prophet ﷺ explained that tranquility descends because of the recitation of the Quran.20 When people gather in a mosque to recite the Quran and study it together, mercy covers them and angels surround them.21
… That was As-Sakina (tranquility) which descended because of (the recitation of) the Qur'an …
The Quran was also revealed in stages specifically to strengthen the heart.22 Even listening attentively when the Quran is read invites Allah to grant you mercy.23 Be gentle with yourself as you practice, and allow these sacred words to bring quiet solace to your soul.

Abu Huraira reported Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) as saying: He who alleviates the suffering of a brother out of the sufferings of the world, Allah would alleviate his suffering from the sufferings of the Day of Resurrection, and he who finds relief for one who is hard-pressed, Allah would make things easy for him in the Hereafter, and he who conceals (the faults) of a Muslim, Allah would conceal his faults in the world and in the Hereafter. Allah is at the back of a servant so long as the servant is at the back of his brother, and he who treads the path in search of knowledge, Allah would make that path easy, leading to Paradise for him and those persons who assemble in the house among the houses of Allah (mosques) and recite the Book of Allah and they learn and teach the Qur'an (among themselves) there would descend upon them tranquility and mercy would cover them and the angels would surround them and Allah mentions them in the presence of those near Him, and he who is slow-paced in doing good deeds, his (high) lineage does not make him go ahead - Quran 25:32 (Al-Furqan)
